The Riviera Maya (the area from Cancun to Tulum) is one of the most important tourist areas in the whole country, generating millions in revenue for the state and Mexico.
The train service could be a great addition, helping visitors move safely to their destinations and also for all the workers who travel up and down the Riviera Maya daily for work at the various attractions and hotels. It’s also billed as a greener, low-emissions alternative to all the vans that currently make the journey on a daily basis.
It will be interesting to see how this develops, and whether, like the airport in Tulum, it will come up against strong opposition. I can imagine that the companies who currently run the transportation services from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and Tulum with strongly oppose this suggestion. But if it really is going to be a greener alternative, then maybe it will be worth it.
